Row-by- Row is a Nationwide (plus Canada) experience involving more than 3000 shops. The theme this year is “Home Sweet Home.”
Each shop has designed its own row. To obtain the pattern for a shop’s row, the quilter must physically walk through the door of the shop. The first person to bring to each shop a finished row quilt with 8 or more different rows will receive a prize pack of 25 fat quarters of fabric, and Nationwide publicity.
The Row-by- Row Experience runs from 21 June through 6 September.
Our Row:
LA VISTA DE MI CASA (THE VIEW FROM MY HOUSE)
36” × 9” {36½” × 9½” wsa}
By Michele Lommasson and Rebecca Welch
“As I look out of the picture window in mi casa, a magnificent view of the Sandia Mountains warms my heart. ‘Sandia’ is the Spanish word for watermelon, and the mountains beautifully live up to their name as the last rays of day fall on their slopes. Do you see the cables of the Sandia Mountain Tram? On which I can ride to the crest, 10,678 feet in elevation above Albuquerque? And check out Mr. & Mrs. Jackrabbit, very much at home in my picture.
“My Two Grey Hills Navajo rug graces the wall next to my window, and my view is completed by my beautifully crafted black Santa Clara Pueblo pot, sitting on the table.” We used machine appliqué techniques to make our row, and provide a full scale layout for you to use in tracing each patch on paper-backed fusible web. Of course, you can use needle-turn hand applique techniques equally well.
This design was inspired by Rebecca’s daughter Julie. Becky writes: “As we hiked in the Sandia foothills, she told me how much she missed the Sandia Mountains. It surprised me, because she now lives in Colorado, near the Rocky Mountains. She explained that the Sandias are much more accessible; within minutes of leaving our home, we can hike in the wilderness. I realized how fortunate we are to have such beautiful mountains close by.”
